Waiting On The Light:
Overcoming the Holiday Blues
This time of year you may find yourself with the holiday blues. You might be dreading the stress we can find surrounding this time of year. Holiday blues come in many forms. The good news is there are ways to combat your seasonal depression or woes.
As The Darkness Grows
With the days being shorter it can feel very dark for us this time of year. It can affect how we react to the most mundane activities and events. The growing darkness may even lead us to having a case of the holiday blues. Little every day rituals to help you through the season can give you a needed boost. Get as much day light as you can. Sit by a sunny window when possible. Take a walk in the sunlight on bright days. Distinguish a special candle or lamp to use as a way to remind yourself of the lights coming return.
All Of Those Celebrations
You may find your holiday blues manifest in the form of stress and anxiety. Many of us start worrying about the upcoming festivities we are planning or attending. Dealing with our families can certainly bring on those holiday blues. Try to remember family dynamics change over time. This time of year can strain even the strongest family relationships. Trying to recreate the perfect holiday just like Mom did can overwhelm us. Be realistic with your personal expectations. Gently setting boundaries with guests can also help reduce the stress.
Homesick For The Holidays
Many of us get the holiday blues because we can’t be where we had hoped to be for the holidays. Longing for distant friends and family often brings on the holiday blues. Be gentle with yourself. All on our very own there are ways to rejoice in the return of the light into our world. Seeking out new ways to welcome the light back can help. Making new traditions right where ever you are, might be just the thing while you are waiting on the light.
